Rules

Double Elimination :
A double-elimination tournament is a type of elimination tournament competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament’s championship upon having lost two games or matches. It stands in contrast to a single-elimination tournament, in which only one defeat results in elimination.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Rules :
Submission Arts United uses a unique double-elimination* format, meaning once a competitor loses, he is moved to a “second chance bracket” where competitors will compete for the 2nd and 3rd place.
*Once a division contains 12+ competitors, the division will be run as a Single Elimination format. This is largely due to the complexity that Double Elimination creates.
**In the case of a division with 2 competitors, both competitors must agree beforehand if they will have one match or best out of 3.
This format gives a second opportunity to competitors to have multiple matches, assess and learn from their mistakes and offers an overall better competition and learning experience.

Submission Arts United competitors can compete in Gi or Nogi (or both for adult female competitors). Both formats operate in different rulesets.

Youth Gi divisions follow our SAU Allowable Techniques Chart :

Adult Gi divisions follow the rulesets and guidelines of the IBJJF :

In case of differents ranks competing against each other, we will adopt the rules of the lower belt rank.
Adult Nogi divisions follow our unique Submission Only ruleset
